About the Department

The Department of Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection was established in Nagaland in late 1968 under the Nagaland Weights & Measures Act, 1968, with the original name “Weights & Measures Department.”

The name was later changed to Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection Department vide Notification No. AR/CAN-5/90 dated 21-06-1995.

The department functions as a full-fledged department under the Commissioner & Secretary to the Government of Nagaland. The Additional Controller & Head of Department was notified through No. LM/CP-1/4/2000 dated 06-08-2013.

Mission

  • Enforce Legal Metrology laws to ensure uniform standards of weights and measures.
  • Protect consumer rights through awareness, education, and effective redressal mechanisms.
  • Promote fair trade practices by verifying measuring instruments and packaged goods.
  • Foster collaboration with national and state-level agencies to enhance consumer welfare.

  • Issue and renewal of licenses for manufacturers, dealers, and repairers.
  • Registration of manufacturers, packers, and importers.
  • Consumer rights advocacy through awareness programs and outreach initiatives.
  • Investigation and redressal of consumer complaints and grievances.
  • Implementation and enforcement of Legal Metrology Acts and Rules.
  • Inspection, market surveillance, and compliance checks on packaged commodities.
