Profile

The Department of Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection was established in 1968. Later renamed on 2nd June 1995. It enforces:

  • Legal Metrology Act, 2009
  • Nagaland Legal Metrology (Enforcement) Rules 2011
  • Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules 2011
  • National Standards Rules 2011
  • Consumer Protection Act, 2019

Current manpower: Directorate + District Offices = 191 staff Consumer Disputes Commissions = 33 staff Consumer Helpline = 13 staff

Functions

  • Verification & stamping of weights & measures
  • Calibration of petroleum tanks, storage tanks, weighbridges
  • Enforcement & prosecution under LM Act & Rules
  • Consumer awareness programmes & support to Consumer Organizations
  • Handling consumer grievance redressal through commissions

  • Consumer Courts disposed 8 cases
  • World Consumer Rights Day (15 March) & National Consumer Day (24 Dec) observed

Upcoming Activities

Construction of Consumer Disputes Commission Office at Kohima — ₹120 lakh sanctioned.
